As I recently traveled through Ethiopia, I saw something remarkable: a satellite dish attached to the side of a mud hut. Inside that humble home, a family was watching Hope Channel Ethiopia, eager to embrace truths they had never heard before. 

Ethiopia is a nation of more than 120 million people, many of whom have endured unimaginable hardship. Ongoing conflict has devastated entire regions, separating families and making it dangerous for pastors to reach their congregations. In rural areas, where families live in huts made of branches and mud, and fields are still plowed by hand, poverty is overwhelming. By most measures, these are some of the hardest places on earth to survive, let alone hear the gospel.

Yet even in these conditions, God is at work.

During my time there, I met a young church leader who welcomed me into his home. His entire congregation had recently been baptized into the Adventist faith after discovering Hope Channel. Though their village had no formal church building, no modern conveniences, and no financial wealth, they were rich beyond measure in faith.

We sat together on simple wooden stools as his family prepared a meal of injera, the spongy flatbread made from teff that they farmed by hand. Before eating, we washed our hands in a small basin. Although they had so little, their hearts overflowed with gratitude and joy because of what they had found in God’s Word.

In Luke 4:18, Jesus declares, “He has sent Me to preach good news to the poor.” And in this remote village, where life is defined by hardship, the gospel had arrived, through a satellite signal, into a home where faith had taken root.

This is the power of God’s Word.

Across Ethiopia, in cities and villages alike, Hope Channel is a lifeline of faith. Thanks to donors like you, broadcasts in Amharic, Oromo, and Tigrinya are reaching people where no missionary can safely go.

I heard countless testimonies of how God is using Hope Channel to reach those in need. Let me share a few stories that reveal just how powerfully your support is impacting lives.

A 14-Year-Old Girl Clinging to Hope

At an Adventist University in Addis Ababa, a 14-year-old girl waited quietly after a sermon to greet me. She was poised and soft-spoken, yet she radiated a quiet strength. When I asked about her parents, her expression changed.

“I haven’t seen them in years,” she said. “Because of the war, they can’t leave their region, and I can’t go back.”

Her words weighed heavy on my heart. Separated from her family, surrounded by uncertainty, she had every reason to feel abandoned. But she didn’t. Hope Channel had become her refuge. When fear crept in, when loneliness seemed unbearable, she turned to the programs that reminded her of God’s presence.

Even though war kept her from her family, nothing could separate her from Christ’s love.

Entire Congregations Embracing New Truth

Deep in the rural countryside, I met an entire congregation that had been forever changed by a single discovery. While flipping through their satellite receiver, they came across Hope Channel Ethiopia. The messages resonated. The Sabbath, the Second Coming, the Three Angels' Messages; and they began watching regularly. But there was one problem: they didn’t know who was behind these messages.

They reached out and asked, “Who are you? We want to join Hope Channel!” They had never heard of Seventh-day Adventists before, but when local leaders connected with them and studied the Bible together, they knew they had found the truth.

Their decision came with a cost. Persecution followed swiftly. They were mocked, harassed, and even had stones thrown at them. Their small group was forced to move their place of worship multiple times as landlords refused to rent to them. Yet they stood firm. “This is the truth. We cannot turn back,” they declared.

University Professors and Government Leaders Accepting the Gospel

Not all who are searching for truth live in rural villages. As I traveled, I heard of five leaders from other denominations. Some were university professors, a government official, and a teacher. They had quietly been watching Hope Channel. The more they listened, the more convinced they became.

At first, they studied privately, testing what they heard against the Bible. Then, they began discussing it together and leading their congregations to do the same. One discovery led to another until they could no longer ignore the truth.

In a short time, over 250 people made the decision to accept the Sabbath and the full message of the Bible. These were educated, influential men and women, the kind of people many assume are too set in their ways to change. Yet, their hearts were stirred by the Holy Spirit. The simple truths of the Bible, broadcast into their homes, were enough to change everything.

And it all began with a satellite dish, quietly delivering the Word of God where no one had expected it to take root.

Hope Finds a Way Through You

These stories are just a glimpse of how God is moving through Hope Channel. Where roads are blocked, broadcasts are reaching hearts. Where pastors cannot go, the message is still being heard.

You are part of this miracle.

Because of your generosity, families once in spiritual darkness now know the hope of salvation. Entire congregations are standing firm in their faith. Young people, separated from loved ones by war, are finding comfort in God’s promises.

Yet, there is still so much more to do. Hope Channel’s goal is to reach 1 billion people with the gospel by 2030. Ethiopia is just one part of this vast mission field.
