She Poured Out The Poison, Then Turned On The TV
Father in heaven, thank You for finding us in our darkest moments and turning our pain into a pathway for others to know You. As we read Gladys’s story, show us how You want to use us to bring many sons and daughters home.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.

On a Sunday afternoon in Mombasa, Kenya, Gladys finished washing every last dish and scrubbed the floors. She laid out clean clothes for her three children, helped them shower, and cooked their favorite meal. The house was spotless; the little ones were full and drowsy.
Outside, she set a stool in the shade, whispered what she believed would be her final prayer, and lifted a glass mixed with rat poison.
Grief had stalked her for months. Her husband had died suddenly in a road accident while delivering a vehicle to a client in Nairobi. After the funeral in their rural home, her in-laws sent her away.
Back in Mombasa, in an unfinished house, she tried to hold life together for her two boys and daughter. When a man promised help—walking with her through the insurance process—she clung to the lifeline. He asked for her bank details “to invest” the payout. Then he disappeared, taking all of her financial savings, her family’s future, and what remained of her courage.
Bills were due. Food was running out. Shame pressed on her chest like a weight. If she left now, would someone kinder take the children in? Would they at least remember a clean house, full stomachs, and a mother who tried?
She looked at the glass. This, she told herself, was the only door left until a small voice interrupted.
“Mom, come see! A lady is talking about when her dad died!”
Her seven-year-old tugged her inside. On the TV, Hope Channel Kenya was airing the first episode in a new series on widows called Storyline, a program we had launched years earlier to tell stories of people society often overlooks. The woman on screen shared how, after losing her husband to cancer, she used the only tool in her kitchen, a blender, to make fresh juice. With persistence, she put three children through university. As the story unfolded, the heaviness in Gladys’s chest loosened.
The glass in her hand no longer looked like an exit; it looked like a lie. She walked outside, poured the poison into the pit latrine, and dialed the number on the screen.
Our team welcomed her, listened, prayed, and later invited her to share her story on air. In time, Gladys brought her daughter to evangelistic meetings at Kizingo Seventh-day Adventist Church and kept walking with Jesus.
Then, this year, God did more than restore her—He multiplied the miracle. When her church couldn’t host a downlink site during a Hope Channel Kenya evangelistic series (April 5–26, 2025), Gladys opened her own home. She invited neighbors. A theology student helped lead Bible studies. Night after night, they watched the broadcast together, prayed together, and discovered the gospel together.
By the final Sabbath, thirty-seven people from Gladys’s living room were baptized at the Whitesands beach—thirty-seven new brothers and sisters beginning a life with Jesus because one mother heard a story of hope just in time.
Scripture describes this holy pattern: “He comforts us in all our tribulation, that we may be able to comfort those who are in any trouble” (2 Corinthians 1:4, NKJV). God rescues us—and then sends us to rescue others. Gladys was saved, and then God used her to help save others. This is what happens when the gospel meets real life through media: one story becomes many.
Your Role in the Miracle
Your generosity turns a testimony into a turning point. It brings a widow’s story into a home, places Bible lessons in waiting hands, and keeps a signal strong enough to gather neighbors who will step into the water together. That is how gifts like yours became thirty-seven new believers through Gladys’s home.
Hope Channel is global in vision and local in voice, speaking in more than 100 languages so people hear the gospel in the language of the heart. As December closes and we advance toward the 2030 vision of one billion reached, your year-end gift can do what it did in Mombasa—multiply.
Would you make a generous year-end gift today so that more “Gladyses” can hear hope in time, so the next 37 can come to follow Jesus?
Thank you for being part of a movement where one rescued life becomes a lighthouse for many.
With gratitude,
Vyacheslav Demyan
President, Hope Channel International
P.S. Your gift today helps place hope on every screen and in every language so the next story that airs can become the next baptism you helped make possible.
May your Sabbath rest anchor you in His unshakable hope.
